A Christmas morn slow up the East is creeping,! I wake—Ah me! how nicely I’ve been sleeping, And lazily I turn and strive to wrap My senses, in a last sweet morning nap, But like the oftime quoted mice, and men I find I’ll have to lay my plans again. For from the room o'er head breaks on my ear Such chattering and laughter sweet, and clear, Like warbling of summer birds at dawn ! In fluttering welcome of the coming morn, *•>«. Then pit-a-pat upon the nursery flqor, Then helter-skelter down stairs to my door Little white feet are hurrying. Five little stocking hung up over night Five sweet, shrill voices, eager with delight, Make all the air with merry laughter ring, At each discovery of some goody thing. On the wide hearth, blazing is the Christmas log: i On the side-board, foaming, is the rich eggnog; In the crowded pantry Mother’s set away The richest frosted plum-cake to be cut to-day; And the great gobbler, monarch of the year Through murder “fowl” helps on our merry cheer Gathering around the door-way, their ivory teeth shining; With rolling eyes, and kinky curls dose twining, Crowd the urchen darkies, proud and swift
