The following statement was released late last week from the office of Hon. Burr P. Harrison who is not seeking reelection to his seat in Congress, representing the Seventh District.
Washington_I congratulate the Democratic Committee on its courage in deciding to give the selection of a nominee for Congress to the people in an open primary election. I believe that this courage will pay off in November when the people will select the candidate of their choosing in preference to a candidate chosen for them in a smoke-filled room.
For a number of reasons, I have concluded I should be completely neutral in the July primary. Pp until now, I have been willing to talk and advise with any prospective candidate as to what candidacy and service in Congress involves. Now that the list has been closed, to avoid misunderstanding, I have decided not to discuss the campaign further with any of the candidates or with anyone else.
Since such prolonged silence is not in keeping with my normal predilection, it is probable that in the fall I may have a few words to say.
My gratitude to the people of the Seventh District for their kindness, patience and tolerance of me ■ will remain deeply imbedded in my heart for the rest of my days.
