Secretary of Agriculture Orville L. Freeman today called for a referendum of turkey growers June 18 through June 22 on the proposed national marketing order for trukeys.
If that order is made effective by the Secretary as a result of grower approval by at least two thirds of those voting in the referendum, by number or by volume of production, it will be the first marketing order program to be operated on a nationwide basis for any farm commodity. The order is designated to provide the industry with means by which the marketing of turkeys can be adjusted so as to assure fair returns to producers and reasonable prices to consumers.
In today’s action Secretary Freeman also issued the final decision on the turkey order as modified in the light of exceptions filed by industry representatives to the recommended decision issued February 27.
The order issued today contains two significant changes:
(1) The base period, for determination of allocation bases to be used in one method of supply-managment, in 1965 and thereafter will be computed by using the average marketings of the preceding 3 years rather than the average of the highest marketings of the previous 3 out of 4 years, and
(2) Producer-growers, who produced turkeys under contract with contract-producers who assume or
