Over one-half million sheep In Virginia will be in* spected during the two-week period February 4*18 - the "first action step in an allout effort to free the state of scabies,^ an ancient but still troublesome disease. State and federal agencies are tearning up with the sh^ep industry apd veterin-~ arlans in the program. W. • H. Lyne, county agricultural agent in Rappahannock county, is the local coordinator,, and is currently compiling lists of all sheep producers in the county. He urges sheep producers who have not been contacted or listed to call | him as soon as possible. ! Lyne points out that many ' states already have conducted a scabies eradication program, and Virginia’s neighbo r s, including Maryland, Kentucky, Tennessee,' and West Virginia,, are planning i or already have started pro: grams. The continued presence of scabies in Virginia would mean that the Old Dominion would be a source of infection for nearby states, and that sheepmen here ; could expect strict enforcement of the regulations governing interstate movement of their animals. Restrictions notwithstanding, it is a monev-making proposition for sheepmen to iget rid of scabies, Lyne ! says. It is a costly and potentially dangerous disease. Sheep infected with scabies are restless, lose weight, |wool and condition - all rejsulting in a considerable
jloss to the producer. Flocks showing scabies symptoms during the February inspection will be further checked by state and federal veterinarians. Diseased flocks will be dipped under state and federal supervision at no cost to the jowner., Dipping will not be required for clean flocks. Lyne says about* BevSnty sheep producers, with 2500 head of sheep are involved in Rappahannock County*
