must show each employee’s social security number and name as well as the correct amount of wages paid In the calendar quarter. Tax returns which omit or show incorrect social security numbers or names are not: complete or correct even though the correct amount of wages may be shown, and: may cause employees to lose valuable social security benefit payments. Mrs. Daly said that employers should require each employee to present his or her official social security card at the time they are hired. The employee's name and social security number should be recorded just as they appear on the social security cards, so that the employer's records will be correct. Then when the quarterly tax returns are filed with the Internal Revenue Service, they will be complete and correct. ^ u
The Social Security Administration wants to impress on employees that they have a responsibility to themselves, their fam-. lly, their employer and their government. They should present their official social security card to their employer and should not ask the employer to accept their Social security number from memory, a scrap of paper, old W-2, etc.
There are about 135 million social security earnings records kept by the Social Security Administration Accounting Division. Each record bears a different social security number, but many bear the same names. Even one wrong digit in the social security n-umher shown on the employers quarterly tax return, may, cause the wages to be credited to some other wage earner's record, or to otherwise fail to be properly credited without undue and costly delay.
Everyone should check his or her social security account at least ^very three years to make sure that they are getting proper credit for their earnings. This will insure that future retirement, disability or survivor benefit payments will be correct. Post card forms for this . purpose may be obtained by. telephone, letter orpersonal 'call at the SocialSecurity Office located at 133 W. Boscawen Street, Winchester, Virginia or telephoning 6623846.
