Actually, a jsoil may produce a higher yield of some other crop than corn. For example, some of the red soils such as Cecil in Southside Virginia are perhaps capable of producing higher average yields of alfalfa than corn. The same can be said for pasture. Certain land now in pasture should go out of pasture because it cannot, be intensified. Farmers should also consider the competitive ability of different crops for the soil. Will corn or alfalfa produce themostfeed at the greatest profit on a particular soil? Will pasture produce more feed at more profit per acre on a soil than some other crop?
