Smith Appointed To
Merchant Marine Academy
Charles L. Smith, a 1963 graduate of Rappahannock High School, was notified last week of his appointment to the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, Long Island, New Yprk. Charlie, the son of Mrs. G. W. Smith, Jr., and the late Mr. Smith of Flint Hill, will enter the Academy August 18 with some 300 other students. He was nominated for appointment by Rep. John O. Marsh, Jr., of the Seventh Congressional District. Out of 120 applicants from Virginia, he was one of seven to receive an appointment. After being nominated for entrance to the academy, he was required to take highly competitive tests and was judged on college board scores and high school grades. Applicants also undergo strict security checks and thorough physical examI inations before being accepted.
