Forest Fire Damage
The Virginia Division of Forestry reports that the spring of 1963 was the worst for forest fires in the Northern Piedmont area in twenty years. In .Rappahannock County, 5 forest fixes burned 49 acres of forest land.
In the sixteen-county Northern Piedmont area, 366 fires burned 8,754 acres of timberland. Most of these fires occurred between March 25 and April 28.
Extremely hazardous fire condition^ existed in most areas in the district from April 4 to April 28 during which time little or no rainfall occurred to alleviate the tinder dry dondition of the forests in the area. Several fir,es occurred on windy days and in areas of heavy fuels, and as a result, large fires from 300 to 2,000 acres occurred. Counties experiencing these larger fires were Amherst, Nelson, Louisa, Fairfax, and Prince William Counties; Albemarle and Fluvanna Counties also experienced a fire in this category which burned in both counties.
