A good blow can make the river choppy and unfriendly, but when this happens it is easy to switch to state owned ChandlerMill Pond just a few miles away. This is a bass, pickerel and panfish lake and good boats can be rented at the lake. Staunton River State Park sprawls over the peninsula formed by the confluence of the Staunton and Dan Rivers near the head of Buggs Island Lake. This is big water featuring lunker size largemouth and striped bass plus catfish and a wide variety of panfish. Park owned'boats are held for rental, but the fisherman should take his own motor. A man with a paddle can hardly make a dent in the 50,000 acres of water! Douthat, an extremely popular mountain park, has a seventy acre lake within its boundaries. Boats are available, but only electric motors are permitted. The lake contains some lunker pickerel plus both large and sm allmouth bass and panfish. A trout stream feeds the lake so a flashy rainbow or brookle is always a possibility. The Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries considers Douthat a possible trout lake and has made experm iental stockings. Outside of the park, but close by is the famous Cowpasture
