Potatoes Eastern Shore potato growers will begin harvesting this week. Due to the heavy rainfall of a week ago, a 5 to 6 per cent loss of potatoes is estimated in the low-lying sections of the Eastern Shore. As of June 1 an estimated production of 3,150,000 hunderweight of potatoes is forecast on the Eastern Shore1 per cent above last year or 2 per cent above the 5 year average.
Tomatoes Heavy rains during the first part of June caused some local flooding and damage. A total of 11,300 acres of tomatoes for fresh market and processing is expected in Virginia—7 per cent below last year. Planting of tomatoes was a little later this year. Harvesting should begin the last week in June.
