I am glad to add my word of welcome to you all. We have learned that it is quite an adventure to establish a library. This one seems to have growned, like Topsy, but I’ll try to review its history for you. This building, as most of you know, was built by James .Powers in 1858. The building was designed as a Presbyterian Church and was used for this purpose until 1900. Miss Lucy Stuart and Mrs. Pauline Slaughter were the last two members. It was acquired by Mr. Clyde Baggarly, in 1927, with the expressed intention of using it as the Town Hall, but this plan fell thru and the building stood unused for many years. Very early in 1960 a small group of people--Mrs. George Davis, Jr., Mrs. Ike Parrish, Mrs. Veronica Keating, Mrs. C. E. Johnson and myself— had been discussing the possibility of acquiring the building, with the idea of converting it to a county librarymuseum. It seemed a pipe dream, at first, but we discovered that many people shared our hopes. Just at that time Mr. Baggarly, because of ill health, announced the sale of the
lemon juice and salt to make a tasty dressing for cucumber salads.
