Just one item published recently in the Washington Post, as reported by Nate Haseltine, should point up the importance of a community being members of the Red Cross Blood Bank. A patient in the Georgetown University Hospital was suffering from a blood platelet deficiency causing internal bleeding. Up to the time of the newspaper report he had received 427 pints of Red Cross Blood, which figured at the minimum commerical price of $25 a pint would have exceeded a cost of $10,000. Incidentally, this particular disease is curable. Besides the usual reasons of humanitarism, a pride in doing ones part in any worthwhile project, etc., it is of sound economic value to have Red Cross Blood available. As has been pointed out before, if our area continues to fail to meet its quota the Red Cross Blood Bank will of necessity be withdrawn and it could cost our citizens up to $5,000 to buy blood from commercial blood banks, in case of emergency or prolonged illness.
