They are business tools, business considerations, and a cost of doing business. It’s a serious matter to the grocer and he studies a game or; giveaway pretty carefully before he starts it. It's important to get back more from it in added sales profits, or good will than it costs. Essentially, games and giveaways are promotions that will the grocer hopes, pull you into his store, and, to a lesser degree, bring you back to the store. Once there, the grocer nas other ways of coaxing you to buy and getting you to return. Here price, quality, friendliness, service, atmos phere, and many other things play a part. The promotion itself is designed primarily to get you there. You may often ask, “Why doesn’t the grocer just cut prices? I’m looking for a low cost store! 'Actually, it appears that that’s what you say not what you do. Glamour and the possibility of “something for nothing' seem to attract people more than just plain low prices. Besides, it’s hard to really see the effects a price reduction of 1/2 to 1 per cent (perhaps the cost of a promotion) in our food budget. The games and giveaways are bo much more dramatic. Games and giveaways actual ly are a sign of fierce competition among grocers. It’s not price competition but it is com petition for attention and dollars. Areas where there is less competition among stores have fewer games and giveaways. It’s a good sign if all stores in your area are promoting in this way. So why not join in the fun?
