In 1957 the per capita income was $1,951, the highest of the six areas—as was median family income at $4,094. By 1975 it is estimated that per capita income can hit $2,857 and median family income $7,454.

Mary B. Settle of VPI said there are also challenges to families in the area. The population is growing rapidly and the percentage of young people is rising rapidly. Young persons are marrying and starting families at an early age, and these teenage marriages are breaking up at a faster ra'te than those among persons who are 20 to 25 years old when they marry.

Women are younger when their families are completed. By their thirties, women who have two or three children no longer have responsibility for constant care of children and can seek employment outside the home. And more and more Jobs are being made suitable for women.

There are opportunities also in the field of human nutrition. If the nutrition knowledge we now have were effectively and consistently put into practice, it would be the greatest single step forward in public health that could be made, said Miss Settle.
