Timeliness, adapted varieties, levels of fertilization, seeding rates, liming. . all are of economic importance if your purpose is to maximize profit, or minimize loss. Test results on a soil sample properly taken can save you money. Results on a sample that is not representative of the field in question can prove costly. All one needs do is follow sampling instructions on soil test sheets available at this office. Barley responds more to lime than our other small grains. However, since small grains serve as nurse crops for hay mixtures, which generally include a legume, needed lime should be applied this fall. Lets get those soil samples in right away. Winter Oat Varieties: Bronco, Dubois, Lee, also Roanoke seems promising from limited tests. Time to Plant: Sept. 1-Oct. 1. Seeding Rate: 2-2 1/2 bushels per acre* Wheat Varieties: Anderson, Redcoat, Seneca, Taylor 49, Tayland and Thorne. Time to Plant: Oct. 1-Nov 1. Seeding Rate: 1-1 1/2 bushels per acre.
