Christmas Hints An accident can take the joy out of Christmas. Guard against fire in the home during the holiday by checking wiring for Christmas lights, using a screen at the fire place, and keeping the Christmas tree standing in water. For further protection, spray the tree with a solution of 9 parts water glass (available at drug stores), one part water, and a teaspoonful of household detergent. This will cause no change in the color of the needles, and the foliage will have a shiny translucent finish. “Suds-snow is especially good for decorating windows, mirrors, wreaths and even the Christmas tree. All you need is plenty of packaged soap or detergent, and a little water. Mix and whip with a rotary beater or an electric mixer. You don’t have to measure exact proportions - just add either more soap or more water as required. For drifts of snow, beat the mixture to a stiff, meringue-like consistency. A thicker, claylike mixture makes snowballs and snowmen. As the snow dries, it stiffens to a porous texture and lasts for weeks. Most important, it’s easy to clean up.
