Nancy Latham of Amissville is active in the Appalachian Volunteers organization at Berea College. The Volunteers are students from twenty Eastern Kentucky colleges who are interested in improving life in the poorer regions of Kentucky mountains. They give their Saturdays to work on the projects without thought of pay. Last year, when the students began to organize, the Volunteers helped winterize forty one and two room, rickety, dilapidated rural schools in Eastern Kentucky. The materials for renovation were donated by private companies. Jhis ye^r the Volunteers are wmrking mainly to (establish libraries in the small back wood schools and to provide “school enrichment" programs for the many children who voluntarily come to school on Saturdays. The children enthusiastically participate in such projects as music> folkdancing, singing, art, drawing, cutting out pictures, and observing numerous science demonstrations. The entire program is being wellreceived by the communities. At present the Appalachian Volunteers effort is coordinated by the Council of Southern Mountains at Berea.
