Rep. John O. Marsh, Jr., has urged Secretary of Agriculture Freeman to continue the practice of recent years in buying turkeys for the school lunch program. Marsh, whose 7th Congressional District includes the important Shenandoah Valley poultry producing region, pointed out that turkey prices ^continue low, whereas producer costs have advanced in the past year. He wrote Secret tary Freeman that purchases for the school lunch program not only would assist turkey farmers, who do not receive any direct price supports, but also would provide a high protein item to school children at low cost to the government.
His letter follows:
“Dear Mr. Secretary:
I find considerable concern in the Virginia poultry producing areas because of indications that the Department may not make purchases of turkeys for the school lunch program this year, and I write to express the hope that the Department will decide, at an early date, to continue its practice of recent years of making reasonable purchases, of this high protein item for distribution in the school lunch program. My recent information indicates that, while the producer have been able to bring production of turkeys into reasonable balance with demand,
