The South produced 60%, of the nation's total output of pulpwood in 1964. There are 82 pulp mills in the south with a daily capacity of 56, 000 tons. Buckingham led ’ the state in production with 83,708 cords. Virginia produced 2,130,000 cords of pulpwood in 1964. This is an increase of 7% over 1963. In addition to the pulpwood, 246,300 cords of chips were produced. These chips are made from slabs and edgings which ordinarily would be waste material. There are seven pulp mills in the state with a combined daily capacity of 4,700 tons.
