management here can pay off on market day. Sows should be brought in a few days before farrowing and washed thoroughly , with soap and water. This removes caked dirt which probably contains internal parasite eggs. If the dirt is not removed, the baby pig will get a heavy infestation of worm eggs the first time he nurses. Chemical worm remedies are not as good as management which prevents worm infestation at the pig's first nursing. Immediately after washing the sow, move her into clean and adequate farfowing quarters. With proper farrowing quarters, the battle for healthy, heavy pigs at weaning time is more than half won. Farrowing quarters should be clean, warm, dry, free of drafts, and should prevent the sow from laying on pigs and killing them.
