Letter To Editor
Dear Editor, I have just read a letter from the Supervisor of Hampton District addressed, I presume, to all voters within the district. This letter was written to determine the wishes of the people, in the form of a straw vote, regarding proposed school construction. This Objective, I am sure, is a very democratic gesture, however, I feel that the letter itself is quite misleading. I can assure the writer as well as the people that there is more involved in the alternatives of school construction proposed than, as stated in the letter, size of school versus tax increase. What of upkeep on three schools versus one? What of cost of maintaining and providing adequate teaching facilities in three schools instead of one? What of three princlpalsbips instead of one? What of dissatisfaction among people that will arise when assignments of pupils to a particular school are made? It is a well recognized fact that neither Washington or Sperryville elementary school is adequate for the optimum physical plant necessities. Where is the democracy in subjecting some to second and third rate facilities while others have better? I could go on and on pointing out thingfcthat should be considered wkfore making this decision and in view at this I feel that the while picture of the situation should be understood by the people before coming to a decision. The voters of Hampton District must not be led to believe that the question is as simple as size versus tax inbut
rather one of many, facets. At this time, all things considered, the construction of the larger completely console dated school will provide the people the best, educationally as well as economically.
