What is called a nut'when it i is really a pea? About 40 ‘countries raise it for oil, but in the U. S.f it’s used mainly as a spread? People eat it by the bag, but an elephant likes it by the trunk full? i A member of thebeanfamily, I it’s the peanut. Governor Mills E, Godwin,' jr., recently called attention to National Peanut Week,: ; March 8-18, when he pointed I out that “Dating from colonial times* the cultivation of the | peanut has provided Virginia | with one of her major agricultural industries, which today amounts to approximately $115,000,000 annually." First discovered by Euro-j peans in Brazil in the 16thi century, peanuts were carried! to Africa and then back to this country on the early slave ships. In Bantu Language, it was called nguba. From this came the word goober, and this was the popular name for the ground vine product during the period of the Civil War in the United States. In early colonial times and even today in much of the world, they are called earthnuts. In this country, the cultivation of peanuts was carried on throughout the southeastern states, but was largely confined to Virginia until about 1865 when goobers were such a delight to soldiers serving in Virginia that many southerners carried the ground peas home with them. Even today the large peanuts that are salted or purchas ed in the shell at ball parks and circuses are known as the Virginia variety. They are grown mainlv in southeastern
