As participants in the program, these schools received USDA-donated foods and cash reimbursement for lunches served. In the elementary schools of Rappatufnnock 60 to 65% of the average dally attendance take advantage of the school lunches. There is dramatic evidence that the lunch program for needy children has resulted in improved attendance records, greater participation in sports and other class activities and less frequent occurrences of sickness which could be attributed to poor nutrition.
