Two Shootings
Occur on Weekend
Reuben Smoot of Washington, Va. is in Winchester Memorial Hospital in serious condition with gunshot wounds sustained at his Harris Hollow home Friday evening, October 6. Smott was wounded in the chest with a 22 calibre revolver. Frederick H. Jenkins, 30, also of Harris Hollow near Washington, and a son-in-law of Smoot has been charged with the shooting. Officers in vestigating the incident were Trooper J. B. Willis, Deputies John Walker Jenkins and Ernest Lillard. According to authorities Tuesday, the victim was responding to treatment as well as could be expected. The bullet had not been removed. Mrs. Shirley Williams Phillips was hospitalized Sat urday night with a gunshot wound in the chest. The wounc was inflicted by a 22 calibre pistol and the shooting occurred at the home of Robert Hughes near Huntly. She was taken to Warren Memorial Hospital, Front Royal by the Flint Hill Rescue Squad. According to authorities, Mrs. Phillips said the gun was hers and the wound was accidentially inflicted by herself while she was cleaning it. She is a former resident of Amissville. Sheriff Charles K. Estes investigated the shooting.
