The establishment of a new industry in Flint Hill was the subsequent outcome of the purchase of an island off the Virginia coast. Sound dizzy? The industry is Kustom engineering Corporation under the management of Col. Howard R. Kuhn (U.S. Army Corps of engineers Ret.) which constructs and markets pre-assembled houses. Several years ago a groupof jfriends purchased an island to |use for vacations, fishing and 1 relaxation. This was a great idea, but on an island or any vacation site, for that matter, one needs a shelter. The venture was sat isfacrory Iso the group toyed with the idea of marketing a like product that could compete successfully with house trailers which are banned in many areas, including Rappahannock, except in trailer parks. The possibility of manufacturing a preassembled house featuring minimum maintenance requirements was studied and proved feasible. Hence the establishment of Kustom engineering Corporation in Flint Hill, Va. which has its first pre-assembled house underway in the building for merly occupied by Wood Brothers Hacking House. Local labor was secured to operate the plant under the direction of Col. Kuhn. The homes are unique, in that there are basic components which can be arranged and rearranged and components which can be added to make most any size or type of house desired, and many designs and sizes available tofit a specific need or price range.
