Cuts Park Attendance
Unpleasant weather conditions held Shenandoah National Park visits down to slightly under 14,000 over the past weekend, a drop of some 27,000 from the comparable weekend last year, Superintendent R. Taylor Hoskins reported today. Those who did visit the park in defiance of the fog and rain to view the autumn color show were not disappointed when brief periods of open I skies permitted good views from the 75 overlooks along i skyline Drive, according to j Hoskins. j The park head estimated that i in general from 60 to 70 perIcent of the foliage had changed ! to the brilliant tones of fall | and in some scattered areas, especially in the South District (U.S. 33 to U.S. 250) the percentage was even higher.
Hoskins said it is hoped that the upcoming weekend will be more promising weather-wise inasmuch as in all probability it will be the best for color this year. He suggested that those who find it convenient to travel Skyline Drive during the week should do so and thus avoid the expected heavy week' end traffic should sunshine prevail.
Plane Makes Emergency
Landing At Boston
Inclement w e a t h e r Friday forced a small plane to make an emergency landing on the property of Harry Liliard at Boston, Va. The pilot, Fjarry Edward Richards of Winchester, was not injured when the 1955 Piper came down, however, damage to the plane was estimated at $600. Richards was enroute to Winchester from Richmond where he had attended a school for Sheriffs and City Sergeants. He is a deputy sheriff of Frederick County. The plane was owned by the Winchester Areo Club, Inc. It was dismantled the next day and truck ed back to Winchester. Trooper L. N. Stevens of Culpeper investigated the crash.
