Chapman of Sperryville celebrated his 90th birthday last week. Mr. Chapman was born in Taylorsville, N. C. on November 13, 1877. He came to Rappahannock County in November of 1903 to assist in the management of the Bailey Manufacturing Company which made locust insulator pins for power lines. The company was lagging and he was to ,aid in its revival, “The first pins made after I came here", recalls Mr. Chapman “went to Niagara Falls." The pin factory was located in the area where the Rappahannock Cold Storage and Blue Ridge Fruit Growers is presently in operation in Sperryville.
Mr, Chapman was talented in many lines and worked at the carpenter’s trade, machinist trade and was a pipe fitter. He had a hand in construction of Skyland in Shenandoah National Park where he installed tanks, water and disposal systems. One of the last projects on which he worked was the cold storage and packing plant at Flat Woods, the Washington Apple Growers Coop. That was about 13 years
