No. 1 Employer
According to District Forester, D. G. Wilfong, Jr,, the figures released for I960 by the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry shows forest products as still beinj the number one employer in Virginia. Lumber, furniture, and paper manufacturers employ 60.7 thousand, or 17.1 percent of Virginia’s salary and wage earners. Forest products ranked second in salaries and wages, in value added by ma nufactur ing, and in capital expenditures.
Although the number of saw mills has dropped sharply during the past ten years, expansion and modernization by existing plants has taken up the slack in employment. Technical advancement in utilization has also contributed to a stable employment picture.
