1. More and more cowmen are finding palpating (pregnancy testing) of their cows in November to be a profitable practice. Cows found to be barren, and frequently those expected to calve in May or later, are sold thereby saving winter feed.
2. Worm replacement heifers and steer calves to be fed over the winter. Replacement heifers to be bred next spring should now weigh around 500 lbs. Remember a heifer to be used later as a brood cow should never become fat. Feed enough forage and grain to keep her growing. It will be necessary to breed smaller heifers a month or two later meaning they will automatically be late caving (after grass) problem cows for several years. To hold over heifers until two years of age before breeding means two winter feed periods before you get any return which is expensive. Wean calves from 2 year old heifers at 175-200 pounds. 3. Have you taken a hay sample for forage analysis? If not, come by and get our hay sampler so you'll be ready to budget feeds before the winter feeding period starts. Then you’ll need to get a silage sample soon after you open your silo. Since hay and silage are usually fed together having forage analysis on both will really put you in position to
