market at the pulp and paper mills. Sawdust, another waste product that usually went up in smoke, is now being used in some paper making. Pine and hardwood bark has been discovered by home gardeners, horticulturists, and nurserymen to be an excellent mulching material and numerous operators have installed equip ment to pulverize and bag the former waste product. Virginia’s timber supply, although badly out of balance in some respects, should be suffi cient to supply present demands for forest products. However, proper forest management must be applied to more of our woodlands if we are to reverse the present trend of overcutting in our preferred, high quality species. Forester Wilfong urges all woodland owners to seek forest management assistance through the Virginia Division of Forestry or through programs offered by the wood using industries.
