Vandalism to highway signs in Virginia cost more than $340,000 last year, according co a new State-wide survey by the Department of Highways. This figure was about onehalf of the total cost for all sign maintenance. In conducting the survey, the Department asked each of the State’s eight highway construction district offices to list their expendituresfor fiscal 1966-67 with regard to signs repaired or replaced due to vandalism. A blast from a shotgun or a bullet hole from another type gun, a splash of paint, a J?everage can or bottle are the Usual methods of destroying or defacing a sign. Sometimes the signs are stolen. Major deterioration of some ’ signs,0perhaps not deliberate, occurs when campaign or advertisement stickers are placed on the front of the sign.
