Mrs. Elaine Russell, the seventh grade teacher and Mrs. Annie Cooke, principal of W.E.S., were on hand for the contest and share the pleasure of a job well done. Both remarked that this was a rewarding honor for the school in its closing year of operation. All county elementary schools will be consolidated in the fall at the new facility just completed.
Culpeper County took second place honors with Margaret Dodson an eighth grader at Ann Wingfield who will be alternate representative from the area. She misspelled the word hubbub. Mayor 2 Council Seats
The deadline has passed for candidates filing for mayor and members of the town council in Washington, Va. for the June election. A check shows no candidate for mayor and two vacant council seats. Those who have filed are Mrs. Virginia Miller, treasurer and council members, Mrs. Bertha A rmel, Mrs. Welland l-'lynt and Mrs. Edna Wayland. Mrs. Dorothy Davis, who was first elected mayor of the town in 1950, declined to seek reelection. She said, "I did not qualify as a candidate for mayor of the Town ol Washington in the lune eh-ction because I think that 14 years is long enough for me to serve in that capacity. Whereas it has given me great pleasure in years past, recently it has become a burden. I thank the] citizens for tfit-ir support and cooperation." Since her initial! election in 1950, she lias served all but two terms, both of which were field by Mrs. Martha Critzer. Absent from the ballot also will be Mrs. Dorothy Hawkins the only council member to serve continuously since 1950 when the "petticoat" rule creat ed national interest. Mrs. Christine Johnston, who filled the remaining seat,did notfile her candidacy.
