A seventh grade student from Washington Elementary School walked off with top honors at the Northern Piedmont Area Spelling Bee held Saturday in Culpeper. Drucilla Davis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George H. Davis, Jr. of Washington, captured fiyst place in the area contest and will go to national competition in Washington, D.C. in June. She was awarded a set of Encyclopedia Britannica, a certificate and a pen and pencil set. All expenses for her trip to the national spelling bee will also be paid. Cil’s remark upon winning the contest was “Gee, I’m glad I read Knute Rockne lastweeki The word which cinched the contest for the champ was "gridiron" and she had run across it in the book she had read. According to the rules of the contest, she had to spell the word missed by the runnerup and then spell one additional word which was gridiron.
