Culpeper district still used $4, 389 of the$21,949 spent on interstate signs because of vandalism.
While Culpeper appeared to be the area hardest hit by sign vandalism, the seven other highway districts also had their maintenance budgets taxed by more than token costs. Bristol district reported costs of $15,147 for primary roads, $16,057 for secondary roads and $555 for interstate roads; Salem $13,214 for primary, $24,441 for secondary and $2,305 for interstate; Lynchburg $7,000 for primary and $13,000 for secondary (the district has no interstate roads). Also: Richmond $14,047 for primary, $27,646 for secondary and $279 interstate; Suffolk $10,700 primary, $10,670 secondary and no cost to interstate; Fredericksburg $23,452 primary, $5,377 secondary and $937 interstate; Staunton $5,355 primary, $5,310 secondary and $185 inter state. A recent tour on interstate, primary and secondary roads in parts of Central and Western Virginia provided visual evidence of sign vandalism.
