In Rappahannock County, which is a part of Culpeper District, a total of $2,974 was needed to repair damages to signs. Of this $2,787 was for primary roads and $187 on the secondary system. Interstate sign maintenance igures reflect relatively lit:le vandalism cost, partly because there are fewer miles — 625 miles of the planned 1,060-mile system are .now open to traffic. Many of the signs do show evidence of vandalism, but only a few have reached the point that they had to be replaced. The 13-county Culpeper district reported that of the $89,414 spent on maintenance of primary road signs during ast year, $71,532 was attributable to vandalism.
