Snap a picture anywhere in Rappahannock and you get beautiful scenery. Put a man with a hoe in the middle of it at this season and you know he is digging thistles. Once these dreaded biennial weed pests send up shoots 10 or 12 inches tall, 2, 4-D is ineffective in controlling. Digging is effective, if the cut is well below the crown as in picture on right.
