Final official tabulation of Virginia’s 1967 traffic deaths stands at 1,223, to mark a 10.6 percent increase over the 1,106 experienced in 1966 and the highest toll in the history of the Commonwealth, Colonel H. W. Burgess, Superintendent of State Police and Chairman of the Governor’s Highway Safety Committee, announced today. “This marks the seventh consecutive year of increase," he said, noting that there were 756 deaths in 1960, 856 in 1961, 974 in 1962, 989 in 1963, 1,050 in 1964 and 1,062 in 1965. Highest toll previously was 1,110 in 1941.
