Aged 65 or over and still working? What about the future? You should be planning NOW for the future and event ual retirement. You owe it to yourself and your loved ones to make the best plans possible. One of_the really important things you will want to do is to establish your eligibility for social security benefits and Medicare. That’s right. You can establish your eligibility for social security bene fits and Medicare and continue working. There are several advantages in doing this now. It’s possible that some social security benefit payments may be made while you continue working. Once your claim is filed, the Social Security Ad ministration will determine what monthly benefit payments may be made, if any, and you won’t have to wonder about it. If your earnings are too high to permit payment of monthly benefits now, they will be started when you notify the Social Security Administration that you have reduced your earnings below specified levels, retired, or when you reach age 72 regardless of your earnings.
The Medicare provisions will become effective with your 65th birthday whether you are receiving monthly benefit payments or not. It is necessary however to file a claim if you’re to be covered by the Medicare provisions.
When you contact the Social Security office to file your claim, you will talk with a representative whose profess ional interest is social securl ty and its related service to the public. You will probably find out some things about this important and complex subject which you were not aware of. A possible example of this is the social security definition of “retirement*.
