Dairying during the past 2-3 decades has become an important industry with output going primarily to non-farm people. As with mostallareas of agriculture, production efficiency has been a major goal in dairying. Today we have 45 per cent fewer milk cows than 20 years ago, but production is only 5 per cent lower. The annua I average production of milk per cow has moved from 4,400 poundsto7,370poundsan increase of 68 per cent. This progress has not been accomplished as entire net gain to dairymen. Capital investment and operating costs have moved up sharply during the period. The price received for milk sold to plants in 1948 was $5.47 per hundred pounds and $5.81 in 1967.
