Friends and members of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church will meet Sunday, June 23, to dedicate the newly renovated sanctuary and the new Sunday School Building.
Mt. Lebanon Church was organized in 1833 at the present site in Scrabble, Virginia located in Rappahannock County between Boston and Woodville. The first pastor to serve the church was the Rev. Silas Bruce. Other ministers following him were-L. R. Steele, M. R. Grimsley, George W. Collier, Charles W. Hall, H. A. Wiltshire, Barnett Grimsley, A. S. McFadden, 1. E. Belch, Gary Baldwin, Charles Clement, John St. Clair, A. C. Walker, Jr., Lewis Broughman, A. Paul Thompson, S. Felton Carter, George W. Bowman IH, John Adams, Park Dickerson, George Williamson and John McKay. - Eleven o'clock services on Sunday will be conducted by the present pastor, the Rev. John McKay, who took over pastoral duties November 1967 at the New Salem and Mt. Lebanon Churches.
Camping Facility
Opened On Drive
The first modem camping facility in Shenandoah National Park’s northern section will open to the public June ]4, Superintendent R. Taylor Hoskins announced today.
Located at Matthews Arm just off Skyline Drive at Mile 22.2, the new campground will contain 186 sites, 167 for tent or trailer and 19 for tent only, five comfort stations, fountains, and a sanitary disposal unit for trailers. Limited camper supplies will be available at the Elkwallow Wayside at Mile 24.1.
Hoskins said it is fortunate that the Matthews Arm Campground is opening early In the season because of limitations this year brought about by rehabilitation of otlu'r facilities at the lewis Mountain and Big Meadows campground.
The entrance to the Lewis Mountain campground is being reworked to direct traffic in a clockwise pattern to permit easier access to the camping sites and the sites themselves are being rehabilitated. The unit will be reopened to public use, also, on June 14. At Big Meadows, the major portion of the facility is twing converted into a conventional campground suitable for either tents or trailers and will not be available for use until late in the season. The work includes construction of three new comfort stations. Hoskins advised that during the Big Meadows construction, 66 sites adaptable for either tents or trailers will be available. Also in operation is the Loft Mountain campground in the southern section of the Park.
Hoskins stated that with the opening of the Matthews Arm ampground and following completion of the work at Lewis Mountain and Big Meadows, Shenandoah will have more than 700 sites in modern campgrounds. In addition, then1 are two primitive iverflow areas, at Big Meadows vith 200 sites, and at Dundo with 15 sites. The Park’s interpretive program s being extended to the new datthews Arm area, with hikes daily and campfire programs each ■vening except Tuesday. Similar >rograms will continue as in the>ast at Skyland, Big Meadows, ,ewis Mountain and Loft fountain, according to Hoskins.
