By W. H. Lyne H. S. Barksdale accompanied your scribe to Richmond last Friday to attend a session called by Delegate Tom Frost to strengthen the thistle control program in Northern Virginia.
Others in the group included Maurice Rowe, Commissioner of i Agriculture, E. W. Turner,
| Landscape Engineer, Virginia [Department of Highways, W. H. Matheny, State Entomologist and R. R. Tudor, Extension Agent, Agriculture of Fauquier.
The Rappahannock delegation went armed with a photo and a couple of thistle plants, the latter creating much excitement at the Capital as several thought we had come “to plant”the lawn! Not so.
Our main concern was the use of thistle seed infested straw as mulch from the Harrisonburg area in seeding slopes on highway cuts and fills. Mr. Turner readily agreed to put out a directive to all district highway offices to use only straw produced within the county where it is to be used to which Mr. Frost requested that even then it be straw approved by Extension Agents.
Also, Mr. Barksdale displayed thistle he had gathered along Route 522 near Flint Hill which had recently been sprayed with 2,4-D which showed untimeliness of application was completely ineffective in killing this pest. Highway Department was glad to learn this and future applications will be made either in the fall or
