Food in Rap. County
ATLANTA, Ga.--The U. S. Department of Agriculture will begin distribution of US DA-donated foods to eligible needy families in Rappahannock County by July 15. USDA's Consumer and Marketing Service said space for storing the food, certifying eligible families, and distributing the food to those eligible will be obtained this week, and announcement will be made of the location.
Families wishing to apply for food should come to this location. Certification is expected to begin by July 1. Russell H. James of Atlanta, southeast district director of USDA consumer food programs, pointed out that the decision to open a USDA-operated commodity distribution program in Rappahannock was made after the county declined to operate either this program or USDA’s food stamp program.
Rappahannock is one of several hundred low-income counties that have been offer ed financial assistance from the Consumer and Marketing Service to pay local administrative costs of operat ing a food donation program. Normally, local governments pay the local costs of operating either the food donation program or the food stamp program, and the federal government pays for the donated foods or bonus stamps. James pointed out that US DA’8 decision to operate the program in Rappahannock County was made only after intensive efforts by the Consumer and Marketing Service and state officials to have the county operate a food program itself--eith’ er with or without financial ! assistance. | Rappahannock County declined to accept such assist , ance, James said, and for this reason the Consumer and Marketing Service will operate the program. Certi fication of those eligible to I receive the food will be j handled by C&MS personnel. James urged all low-income families in Rappahannock County who maybeeligi ble for food to make plans now to apply for their month ly issuance as soon as the certification office opens.
