Sperryville Firemen
Say Carnival Success
Four nights of pleasant weather added to the success of the Sperryville annual Firemen’s carnival and to the pleasure of carnival goers. The carnival closed 'Saturday night at which time a grand prize and many others were given away. Recipient of the grand prize, a 1968 Rambler American, was Mrs. Christine Johnston of Washington, Va. The second prize, a $50 Savings Bond went to George L. Taylor and the $25 Bond to R. E. (Gene) Wood, both of Sperryville. T. J. Pillar, also of Sperryville, was given the walnut rocker and Charlie Coates of Culpeper received the auto battery. Pauline W’ Hershery ol Pennsylvania was given the $10 in groceries and a case of motor oil went to J. M. O’Bannon of Woodville. Bunny Settle of Amissville won the $15 given away Wednesday night.
Beverley Jean Atkins was named carnival queen Friday night. She received her tiara from the last year’s queen, Bonnie Sue Dodson. Beverly will be Honorary Fire Chief until carnival time next year.
Trophies and prizes were ; awarded in numerous classes in the big parade held Thursday night with over 80 units participating. Winners were: best appearing pumper from town over 5 00 population McGhaeysville, second, Culpeper best appearing pumper from town undero 500 population, Mineral second, Spotsylvania; best appearing fire department Gordonsville, second, Franconia Oldest active fireman, was frorr New Market; Company coming longest distance, Rockville.

Mosb; Front Royal; best appearing float Marshall, second, Sperryvilh Queen’p float. i Best comic entry, Charie: Jenkins and his mule; second ,i Candy Man; best appearing marching unit, McGhaeysville second, Vint Hill Farms; bes Honorary Fire Chief McGhaeysville; second, Mt Jackson; Best Boy Scout Troop Luray; best rodeo, Moody Ayloi Rodeo, Sperryville; individua majorette, Maureen Klein; besi queen, Miss Shenandoah Apple Blossom, Miss Jan Minnich Martinsburg, W. Va.
The Sperryville Fir* Department and the community extend appreciation to all whc attended the carnival and to al who worked or contributed to it: success in any manner.
