Old Oak Replaced at
New Mkt. Battlefield
A huge white oak, last survivor of the Battle of New Market which fell last February 4, will be replaced with a young oak by the Pi Kappa Alpha national fraternity, the New Market Battlefield Park announced today.
The gift to the park will honor a founder of Pi Kappa Alpha, Julian Edward Wood, one of 250 Virginia Military Institute cadets in the May 15, 1864 battle. It will also mark the centennial anniversary of the fraternity’s founding at the University of Virginia.
Ranking officers of the fraternity will attend dedication ceremonies at the park August 24 as part of their national centennial convention ir Richmond. James J. Geary, park director, said the tree will be in place by then.
Wood transferred to the University of Virginia to study medicine and in 1868 was one of several students who founded the fraternity there. At the Battle of New Market he was second cadet corporal in Company C of VMI add was a member of the color guard. Later he practiced medicine in Princess Anne County, Virginia
The aged oak, which was approximately 160 years old, had been dead for some time when it fell over but its great skeleton had been a sentinel dominating the entire battlefield. It stood where Union lines were formed at the time of the final victorious Confederate charge in which VMI cadets took part. Fifty-seven cadets were wounded, ten fatally, in this their first battle experience.
The 160-acre New Market Battlefield Park was opened July 1, 1967, to honor the VMI cadets. It features a 12-minute motion picture about them which has won tw ^^international awards. TTie park is administered by VMI with funds from a private bequest.
