Several years ago while traveling through the mountains of North Carolina I was stopped by a man wanting to ride ‘over the gap’. Well, not wishing to ‘skin my ignorance’ I took him to the place he indicated. I couldn’t tell that I had been over any GAP and the word kept haunting me till 1 looked it up in my dictionary. Here are the definitions I found: an opening, interval, breach, pass in a mountain. I accepted the latter as apropos. We know what an opening is, an interval is a distance between points in space or time. We hear so much about the Credibility Gap, the Generation Gap. Is there a Growing Gap between man and God? Let’s add a few more ????.
Oh yes, the word ‘breach’. It means a rupture of friendly relations, of trust. As I go to church on Sundays and see so many empty pews, I wonder at the loss of our friendly relations with- God, our trust in Him. It may be that if we do not return unto Him, we may one day like the exiles in the 137th Psalm, “sit down and weep” ovei1 our lost heritage.
