Income from State sources for Virginia’s highway program fell $2.3 million below estimates during the fiscal year which ended June 30, primarily because the 2 per cent motor vehicle sides and use tax did not produce as much revenue as expected.
'Hie net deficit would have been larger except for the fact that income from the seven cents a gallon State lax on gasoline exceeded estimates by approximately $3.3 million.
Total income from the sales and use tax, enacted by the 1000 General Assembly to help finance a nine-year highway improvement program, a m o u n t e d t o | $21 ,()H7,00(), or IK !) per cent under the estimate of $20 million.
