My brother-in-law filed an application to receive benefits for the children, but was told they couldn’t qualify, even though my sister had worked long enough to be fully insured. It was explained to him that in addition to being insured, the children would have had to have been dependent upon their mother at the time of her death, and because her work was not recent the children couldn’t qualify. I have now been told that the dependency requirement has been dropped. Is this correct?
A. Yes, under the 1967 Amendments the children can now qualify for benefits. Prior to the new amendments it was necessary for the children to be dependent upon their mother at the time of her death. The
