Telephone calling reached a lew peak this Christmas, iccording to Wayne Dementi, the ocal manager of The Chesapeake ind Potomac Telephone Company of Virginia. The new 'ulpeper Communications Center landled approximately 8,04 5 toll •alls. Of these, 6,300 were dialed >v the customer. More than 650,000 long lislance calls were placed on Christmas from Virginia, with nore than 2,500 Operators equired to handle the flood of loliday messages. This is about f 1 percent of the total operating orce. It was a real busy time for the relephone Company people, said he C&P Manager. Since Christmas this year fell on Wednesday, most people had only i one day leave from their work, ;hus curtailing travel. So the shone was their primary means of talking to family and friends in distant cities.
Most of these phone calls were dialed direct, station-to-station. About 91 percent of the nation’s 102 million telephones are tied into the world's largest computer-namely the Direct Distance Dialing network.
