rankly, the Arts and Crafts Group has not grown very fast in membership, in spite of our open invitation to one and all, but, we are proud of our own broadened interests and skills in a great variety of crafts and of the little sparks of inspiration which started new fires of enthusiasm and monetary profit for a few, and blessed us all with enjoyment. In a modest way we have achieved all four of our objectives. Some shops in the county now sell crafts actually made by local men and women instead of mass produced imports from other states. Mrs. Mary Cleverley whose shop is in Flint Hill finds there is more demand than supply and wants more local crafts to offer. Others would stock more local stuff if they could get it.
In the last few years workshops have been offered in bottoming chairs, quilting, basket making, lamp shades, knitting, block printing, ceramics, Christmas ornaments, Flemish- flower arrangements and plastic resin casting. We have also sponsored lipfr-ial drawing and painting groups.
A friend asked “Why do you i want to make that when you can buy it for a little more cf the cost of materials?” She missed the point completely. If that were true, which it isn’t, it still misses ! the point that people NEED , hobbies ’ They NE^D to be creative. Crafts are taught in the j Armed Services, ip Community I Centres and in hospitals for the handicapped, the mentally ill and the aged. jYork with the hands is good for us because it provides | relief from the monotony of humdrum chores, and relaxation and creative self expression. And those who join a neighbor in the pursuit of their hobby finds still another reward, the joy of sharing.
