Dear Mrs. Latham:
Replying to your letter, calling our attention to apparent discrepancy in one of the items in a recent release of our “LOOK AND LEARN” column.
We regret that we must confess to an error — of omission.
The question to which you refer should have read, “What is the largest LAND mammal in the world?” And the answer to this, of course, is the African elephant, the average adult bull of which stands 10 feet 6 inches at the shoulder and weighs as much as 6' 2 tons.
The largest mammal now living (and possibly the largest that has ever inhabited the earth) is the blue or sulphur bottom whale, with record specimens as long as 107 feet and up to 195 tons in weight reported.
We are sorry about the omission of the word “land” in our question, and assure you we shall exercise even greater care than heretofore for complete accuracy. We must say that throughout the years we have been publishing this feature errors have been very few and far between. One compensating thing about any seeming discrepancy — readers are always quick to write in about it, which is good testimonial of reader-interest in the newspaper and in the feature.
